Overview

Disambig gray This article is about the eighth season of Chapter 1. For other uses of Season 8, see Season 8 (disambiguation).

Season 8, with the slogan X Marks the Spot, was the eighth season of Fortnite: Battle Royale. It started on February 28th 2019, and ended on May 8th 2019. Season 8 was the first season to have a Battle Pass that could have been acquired for free (if you completed all the challenges during the Share The Love Event).

The theme revolved around pirates, treasures, and adventure.

How did it Start?

How did it Start?

Season 8 continues the Ice King storyline that began in Season 7, with The Prisoner creating a Volcano and a Jungle biome, destroying Wailing Woods and Lazy Links in the process, while Tomato Temple became an unnamed POI. Lazy Links was replaced with Lazy Lagoon, a small lagoon containing a pirate ship with a small port. These pirates were seemingly brought to the Island by the events that occurred on the island during the previous seasons, and set out to explore it for adventure and possible treasure. Following their arrival on the map, the pirates set up numerous Pirate Camps throughout the island, The Prisoner hatched the eggs he had stolen from Polar Peak, from them sprung forth The Hybrids.

The Season 8 Storyline

The Season 8 Storyline

Some time after the Season had launched, a Helicopter started traveling around the Island as if it were searching for something. At the same time, the Unnamed Investigation Agency returned and set up small dig-sites near Fatal Fields, within Dusty Divot where they dug up a small pit which lava flooded into, and near Loot Lake, where they uncovered a mysterious metal door. The Helicopter landed on Loot Lake and 10 excavators were deployed to dig around the area, as they seemingly found what they were looking for. Unearthed was The Vault, a large and mysterious metal hatch surrounded by five big locks with metal slots.

Several days later, a holographic image of a glyph appeared above one of the Vault locks (visibly different in appearance to the glyphs of The Cube). Around the same time, a large metallic floating 'key' appeared northeast of Lucky Landing, projecting the same glyph above it as the one at the Vault. It was during this time period that the Loopers had noticed that the key must be inserted into its slot in the Vault projecting the glyph. The glyphs themselves seemed to signal what must be done to get each key to the Vault. In this instance, Loopers must hit it with their pickaxes in order to move it to the Vault. After some time and effort, the key had eventually reached the Vault and inserted itself into its hatch, activating the lock.

This activity at the Vault seemed to affect the Volcano, as it started to emit smoke. The other four keys each had their own tasks that Loopers needed to complete in order to insert them into the Vault. Eventually, the Loopers managed to get all five keys into the Vault, and all the locks were activated. However, the activation of each lock brought the Volcano closer to its eruption. By the time all the keys were inserted, lava was seen violently spewing out of the Volcano with the ground vigorously shaking in its vicinity.

On May 3rd 2019, a 24-hour countdown for The Unvaulting appeared just above the Vault.

How did it End?

How did it End?

Once the countdown for The Unvaulting had reached zero, all five locks deactivated as the Vault opened, revealing beneath it the dimension of The Zero Point, a mysterious nexus sphere from which all reality seemingly sprang, used to maintain The Loop that the Island's inhabitants find themselves in. Upon the hatch fully opening, Loopers poured into the Vault, slowly descending into this mysterious dimension. However, unlike in The Butterfly Event, there was a platform made from an unknown metallic material stretching infinitely in all directions. The Loopers were met with six pillars holding the following six items: Drum Gun, Tactical Submachine Gun, Bouncer, X-4 Stormwing, Infinity Blade, and Grappler. The Zero Point was located nearby in a stable and contained state, as a wooden desk with a chair was seen in front with a helmet resting on top. The Loopers were to vote for an item to be unvaulted by pickaxing its respective pillar. In the end, the Drum Gun was chosen. As the other pillars slid down into the mysterious platform, the Drum Gun broke out of its pillar and launched upwards out of The Vault. The Zero Point then started to emit a bright light, as all the Loopers inside were ejected from the Vault.

Following the Loopers' exit from the Vault, the Volcano had finally erupted. From it rose a giant column of volcanic ash reaching high up into the sky, blocking the sunlight, and blanketing the entire Island in darkness. The Volcano launched seven volcanic rocks, one hitting Retail Row, one hitting Polar Peak, and five hitting Tilted Towers respectively.

The Volcano had somewhat calmed following the destruction from the eruption. Smoke and ash remained to cover the Island in darkness for days to come. The Volcano brought immense destruction upon Tilted Towers, making it completely unrecognizable. The only building in the location that somehow escaped any damage was the newly-built No Sweat Insurance office, in the place of the building which was ironically destroyed every other season. The chunk of Retail Row where the shopping district was also suffered major damage. Polar Peak suffered relatively minor damage, as a giant crack in the front of the iceberg had formed following the impact from the volcanic rock.
