Overview

Overview[]

The Storm is a Gameplay Mechanic in Fortnite: Battle Royale that was introduced in the Pre-Season, and is one of the most important elements of the game mode. When in the Storm, a message displaying the text "You are in the storm. RUN!!" will appear.

Functionality

Functionality[]

The Storm is a large ring which surrounds the map at the beginning of every game. As the game progresses, The Storm will form, and then begin to move, before pausing again and repeating the cycle. Eventually, The Storm closes in on the island completely. The Storm damages player's HP, and increases its damage per second as the game goes on. The safe zone is known as the Storm Eye.

Below is a table dictating the timing of each Storm circle, the size, and how much damage it deals per second (as of Chapter 6 Season 1).

  • Wait Time: The amount of time the storm waits before resizing.
  • Resize Time: The amount of time it takes the storm to resize.
  • Damage per second: The amount of damage the storm inflicts on players, as a percentage of their maximum health. For Storm Sickness, it is 3x of base Storm damage.
  • Storm Radius after closing: The size the storm will be when this phase is complete.
  • Move Distance: The distance the storm will travel in this phase.

Players will always be aware of when and where The Storm Eye is shrinking to. This is indicated by the minimap, which also shows the shortest direct path to be safe from The Storm. The White line indicates the direct path to the next Storm circle and the Blue line indicates the direct path to the safe zone when in The Storm.

In regular and Zero Build playlists, it will close until Phase 7, where it fully moves in Phase 8 and 9. Phase 7 has an indicator for the new center of the storm, while Phase 8 moves randomly. During the last 20 seconds of Phase 8, it will stop moving and begin to shrink the safe zone to nothing - Phase 9.

Players can heal in The Storm, and any method of restoring HP will allow the player to survive in it longer. However, staying in the Storm for too long results in Storm Sickness.

Storm Surge[]

If a player is below a set damage threshold, Storm Surge affects them by dealing 25 damage every 5 seconds. When a player is eliminated by Storm Surge in a team based match, the player is instantly eliminated. The damage above or below Storm Surge threshold is indicated below the minimap.

Storm Surge starts to activate at the beginning of the grace period and a warning appearing when the Storm is shrinking prior if there are more players in each Storm phase defined below.

  • Stage 2: 90 players
  • Stage 3: 90 players
  • Stage 4: 74 players
  • Stage 5: 60 players
  • Stage 6: 50 players
  • Stage 7: 40 players
  • Stage 8: 36 players
  • Stage 9: 26 players

Storm Sickness[]

If a player is in The Storm for too long, Storm Sickness will affect the player, dealing increased Storm damage tripled from the base Storm damage. Being in the Eye of the Storm for a brief period when Storm Sickness is already active will not cure/turn-off Storm Sickness if a player returns to The Storm.

Once a player takes a specific amount of cumulative Storm Damage in a single match, the following events occur:

  • 500 Damage: Storm Sickness Warning
  • 600 Damage: Storm Sickness Applies
  • 1000 Damage: Instant Elimination

Strategy Guide

Strategy Guide[]

Calculated - Emote - Fortnite This section outlines a strategy.
Feel free to add tips, tricks and general advice about the topic.
  • Players can stock up on Healing Items to tank enough damage to withstand the storm. Items such as a Medkit, a Flopper and a Chug Splash are especially useful due to their large healing amounts / quick use.
    • The strategy of healing off in The Storm to place high or even earning a Victory Royale (made popular by Fortnite Pro/Creator Qrei) is no longer viable due to the introduction of the Storm Sickness mechanic.
  • Higher DPS storms can be especially effective at eliminating opponents, so items such as the Shockwave Launcher can be used to push players into it, eliminating them. Players even receive credit for this in the Elimination Feed.
  • Items which cause HP damage are especially useful for attacking opponents in the storm, as they will ignore shield and cause players to be eliminated quicker. Good items for this include a Firefly Jar, and Stink Items such as a Stink Bomb or the Primal Stink Bow.

Trivia

Trivia[]

  • The Storm damages Animals and other AI, but not Cube Monsters.
  • Structures and Vehicles will not take damage in the storm
  • In Fortnite: China, The Storm was known as the Signal Zone. Players did not lose HP outside the zone, instead they had a separate 'signal interference' bar. This bar would slowly tick down when out of the Signal Zone, and it could only be recharged while in the safe zone. If the signal interference became too great, the player would be eliminated.
  • At the beginning of Remix: The Finale, the Storm was present and would flash in beat with the startup music.
  • During the initial KPop Demon Hunters collaboration, the Storm Eye became the Honmoon.

Wait, hold on... "It's not just a storm?" What does that mean?
Agent Jones

The Storm is an sentient entity in Fortnite: Battle Royale, and was one of the key parts which allowed the proper functioning of The Loop.

Overview

Overview[]

The Storm is a sentient entity inside the Loop that used to be externally controlled by the Imagined Order. It keeps The Loop running, keeping Loopers from escaping it, and providing a way to eliminate all of them within the 22 minute loop time. It is in truth a sentient entity member of The Last Reality whose sole purpose is to kill and destroy and will ally with any members of The Last Reality present on the Island, most notably Cubes and Storm Kings.

Personality

Personality[]

The Storm's personality is quite difficult to understand and decipher. However during The Device, it became enraged against Midas because he defied it and it created The Wall Of Water as retaliation against him. It must be noted that The Storm can also rage if it sees that there are too many Loopers inside the Storm eye when it is small and can directly strike them with lightning. In order to escape The Loop, Loopers must be in the final storm circle of the match, on the Eye of the Storm and alone.

Storm Push 2 - The Device - Fortnite

During The Device event. Midas powers up The Device, and it starts pushing back the Storm. After The Storm reaches outside The Island, The Looper gets Rifted into The Bridge, inside Agent Jones's Office as Jones walks through the hallway talking to Doctor Slone on his phone. He tells Janice to dial the Resonance Actuator to 7.2. and restart The Loop. They soon return to the island, as The Device shuts down. The Storm is angry and quickly shrinks in and The Device activates again. It holds the storm around The Agency, and overloads it to push it back as much as it can. The Storm disappears, and The Device descends into The Agency as towers get back into their hatches. A rainbow appears, and The Looper gets rifted back to The Bridge. Jones enters his office and sees the looper, as he looks at them and asks if they can hear him.
