Whirlpools were a Game Mechanic in Fortnite: Battle Royale added in Chapter 2: Season 3 to the island Apollo. They were a type of mobility that acted similar to the cooling towers in Steamy Stacks in terms of mechanics and navigating-ability. When entering a whirlpool, you would be boosted up and enter skydive mode. You could then redeploy your glider whenever you wanted. Whirlpools were mostly found in areas with a lot of water and on the edges of the Island.

Chapter 2: Season 3[]
- Update v13.00
- Many whirlpools have been added around the map. They change location every match, but they will always spawn in the same areas, as they have several set spawn locations.
- Some spawn locations include Gorgeous Gorge and Hydro 16.
- A whirlpool has been added north of The Fortilla, and was prominent in a challenge.

- July 1st - Whirlpools have been disabled for the first time.
- July 2nd - They have been re-enabled.
- July 9th - Whirlpools have been disabled for the second time.

- Whirlpools have been re-enabled again.
- August 1st - Coral Castle is added in place of a large whirlpool that was in its location prior.

- All whirlpools have been removed from the map.

- Several glitches that gave players advantages (such as invisibility) were found using Whirlpools, which caused them to be disabled twice.
- A legacy named "Hail Hydro" was added in Chapter 2: Season 4 that would be obtained by using a whirlpool, despite there being none in-game at this time.
- Similarly, the quick challenge for using a whirlpool remained in the game as well.
